What’S In A First Aid Kit?

There can be many different things in a first aid kit.  The best kits are the ones that you yourself have packed so that you know that you have covered everything that you or your family may need including prescription medications as well as things that may be specific to your environment.

However, there are some things that the Red Cross recommends to be in every first aid kit.  That list is:

  • 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
  • 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
  • 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
  • 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
  • 5 antiseptic wipe packets
  • 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
  • 1 blanket (space blanket)
  • 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
  • 1 instant cold compress
  • 2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large)
  • 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
  • Scissors
  • 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)
  • 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
  • Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)
  • 2 triangular bandages
  • Tweezers
  • First aid instruction booklet

Those items should be in any first aid kit, but you really should add your items as well.  For instance, I like to add a burn cream to my kit.  I also have a 36” SAM splint in my kit.  I have the 36” one because it can be cut down if needed.  However, if your kit is big enough, they do make smaller SAM splints including ones for your finger.

I also keep a small magnifying glass in my kit.  I got one that came out of an eyeglass repair kit.  It comes in real handy if you need to remove a splinter or read the tiny directions on the side of a medicine bottle.

Also, you should take your environment into consideration.  If you live in a rural area, you may want a snakebite kit and maybe something to treat poison ivy.  If you are allergic to bee stings, you should definitely pack an epipen.

Antibiotic Ointment Packets Questions

My cat scratched me again?? plz help?? im a little scared!?

So my cat just scratched me it bled for like a sec . then i went to the bathroom and put peroxide on it and its not bleeding anymore. and its not red or anything…is it infected???
And my mom has some swift triple antibiotic ointment packets in her room can i use that to put on my cut?
And if so should i leave it on and cover it with a bandage??? I have really bad anxiety and im really worried even though it just happend so plz answer plz!

If the scratch just occurred it has not had time to get infected. Relax! You have cleaned it out with peroxide so you should have washed any bacteria out. It would be helpful to put the antibiotic cream and a bandage over it to further ward off infection.
