Unlike what many people think, soap doesn’t have to be made with animal fat. Oils extracted from plants are popular ingredients that help to produce a homemade soap. These oils can carry different properties that can nourish your skin.
Soap making oils can usually fall into 3 categories: carrier oils, essential oils, or fragrance oils. Both carrier and essential oils are extracted from roots, plants, flower, etc., however, fragrance oils may also contains synthetic materials in it.
In the following list are some common carrier oils used in soap making.
Caster Oil: Caster oil comes from castor beans and is known to help soothe the skin while at the same time holding in the moisture. It also helps to harden the soap and you can use it in conjunction with other oils.
Coconut Oil: As the name suggests, this oil is extracted from. It is wonderful for making the soap hard and it also works to increase the lather your soap will produce. This is true whether the water is hard or soft in your area.
Avocado Oil: This oil contains vitamin A, D and E, which help in the healing and the moisturizing of the skin.
Palm Oil: You will find that palm oil is one of the ingredients that is often used in expensive bars of soap. In addition to hardening the soap, palm oil also acts as a moisturizer.
Olive Oil: A versatile oil used throughout the ages, olive oil can also be used in soap making. It helps to retain the skin’s natural moisturizer and it also helps to soften the skin. Keep in mind that not all types of olive oil work well for soap making.
There are hundreds of soap making oils on the market today ensuring that you will have plenty of variety in this craft.
Please bear in mind though that not all of the oils that are out there will agree with your skin. Some of oil can irritate sensitive skin. Make sure that you ask your oil supplier for as much information as possible about the oils that you are considering purchasing.

Homemade Soap Questions
How can I make homemade soap without having to use lye? or with a good M&P recipe that doesn’t sweat?
I’d like to make soap (kinda obvious, eh?) But I don’t want to make it with lye for reasons. I’ve been looking at melt and pour soaps, but some site said they weren’t that great. That they only last for a week or two, and they start to “sweat” or melt after they get wet, or even if they don’t. Is there a certain way to make it so it doesn’t do that? Some way that will make it last for several months at least?
Research the Following two soaps. Castille and Glycerine. Sorry My Recipes are currently packed away.
