Iodine Antiseptic Prep Questions
Lamb tail docking and castration by “banding” question?
I have some late lambs this fall–I will be banding for the first time and I am wondering before I dock and castrate (put the bands on) will I need to apply either a rubbing alcohol and/or iodine (surgical prep/antiseptic) over the tail and scrotum? It almost seems like rubbing alcohol over the areas where the band will be then once the band is on, spray some iodine on plus give a tetanus vaccination.
You do not need to prep the site in any way before banding and don’t need to apply anything after banding because there will be no open wound. However, tails can ONLY be banded during the first week of life because later than that will cause extreme pain and it may not even be successful. If they are older than 1 week old, you need to use an electric docking iron, emasculator, or other similar method. You do need to either vaccinate the lambs for tetanus at the time of docking/castrating or make sure the mother was vaccinated for tetanus during gestation (more than 2 weeks before birth) when using the banding method.
