You are familiar with the following situation:
You walk into the bathroom and look in the mirror, now aware that you face (no pun intended!) another day of testing. Spots, whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, and cysts – yet again you have to carry around with you your acne-ridden person! You will be going to school or work within the next ninety minutes. Paranoia starts to set in, and already you are anticipating your appearance coming under the fire of Johnny who sits at the desk to your left in class, and Sally who sits behind – or Peter at work who is already gloating because he is about to be promoted within the next few days. You have not, at present, sought medical remedies and products for your condition, and are happy to plod on in the bathroom before the mirror, fill the sink to overflowing, and, with rapid hands, wrap your head in a cloud of soap lather. “Oh, my” you think. “This feels good. The dirt is coming off. I can feel the acne just lifting away. The soap is getting in, doing its job, getting rid of the muck and the dead matter. I will look different today! Yes… and tomorrow…”
Those of us who are, or have been, in this same situation know how it feels, and the hope which comes from every newly-suggested lotion, cream, pill, method and similar.
When one product does not seem to work, we swiftly move on to the next, regardless of the fact that we never gave the first one any time at all. Yes. Impatience does creep in. It is understandable. We want our ailment to be gone. Away from us. Something of the past. And we want it now!
I take my hat off to those who, as in the above scenario, rely on water and soap alone.
But, does simply washing your body really work to achieve the desired result – the removal of acne?
We can look at it logically: If you are a teenager or a young adult with acne, then you are battling against other enemies, too. Your acne did not just appear because acne wanted to. Acne has no say in the matter. There are other factors involved.
Mainly during adolescence, the sex hormones, called androgens, are a factor as there is an increase in these. They then stimulate the sebaceous glands (oil-producing) to make more sebum than is necessary.
Where there is an excess of sebum, then the same has a desire to escape. Quite simply, it is going to be forced out with the build up – simple physics. But – and this is where the cycle begins – as a reaction, the sebaceous glands become narrow and almost closed. Therefore, sebum cannot get out. As if there were not enough already, another factor comes into play – propionebacterium acnes. This guy is very hungry. A bacterium that feeds on the sebum. As we know from human experience, what we eat must come out again! Propionebacterium acnes releases waste and fatty acids that are an irritation to the sebaceous glands and cause them to be inflamed.
So, we can see from this that everything on the outside is pretty much closed up. If you were to wash, then it would be like washing while wearing a raincoat. The water and soap is just going to run off.
So what next?
Try something that has potence, something designed to successfully penetrate from the outside. Water and soap alone will fail, but combined with something more powerful, will compliment. Why not attack from within, where the root lies? Get that medical equivalent of a Trojan horse in your body that will deploy the active ingredient to fight those roots. There are solutions galore. It is just a matter of finding the right one for you.

Is there any resolution to the neverending conflict with myself?
It can be nearly impossible to make a decision. It is hard to be anything other than passive. I keep churning and churning.
When it comes to dating, I get so wrapped up in myself. I can never decide on the correct approach.
Lather, rinse, repeat. There is no escape.
I think it’s sometimes good to get out of your own head when it comes to things like this. Try going with your first impulse (assuming it’s not overly risky – no skydiving on the first date).
Or, if its a complex decision – write it down. Script out all the choices you can think of (this is sort of getting it out of your head & down on paper). Then, read it (out loud if needed) and see what really makes sense. You can also write down key words and see which ones form them best connection.
And, try taking the lead once or twice a week. Be the first to suggest something. Even if your idea gets shot down, the act of putting it out there in the first place is a really positive move. Also, once a week (at least), do something different. Break your routine and try something new (new food, new place for lunch, different outfit).
