What newborn care products do I need?
This is my first baby so I’m not sure. I’ve gathered a list and wondering if the experienced mom’s could tell me if the items on the list are good and what I missed. Thanks in advance!
- Diaper rash ointment
- Shampoo and body wash (2-in-1)
- Alcohol wipes (for umbilical cord)
- Rectal thermometer
- Baby oil (what do I need this for?)
- Talc free baby powder
- Wipes
First of all congrats!!!!! Babies are soooooooooo much work but totally worth it!!
Diaper rash ointment, yes My favorite is boudreaux (pretty sure i spelt that wrong but u get the idea) but its spendy so desitin is second in my book. I use J&J bedtime moisturizing wash and J&J bedtime bath lotion along with the oil that goes with the collection ( I really do think it helps them sleep better, I get 5 hours out of my little guy for the first shift at night). Oil is used to help prevent cradle cap (its when a baby’s head gets really scaley and gross and peels, but if your baby gets this do not peel it… Can cause it to get bad infection). I usually put it on when my baby is in the bath let it set for like five minutes massage the scalp with a comb or brush then i wash it out with baby shampoo (if your baby doesn’t have alot of hair you can just use body wash) although sometimes i don’t wash it out just rinse his head. You don’t need alcohol anymore. Nowadays they just say don’t put anything on the cord just keep it dry and wait for it to fall off. I also heard baby powder is obsolete too but I use it cause I like it. Plus it makes my baby more comfortable in his diaper. You just have to put some on your hand away from your baby and spread it on him after that to avoid him inhaling alot of the powder. I put it all over on areas where the edges of the diaper will rub pretty liberally and lightly everywhere else. Don’t forget diapers!!! Ha ha my favorite are pampers swaddlers and pampers sensitive thick care for wipes. Nail clippers are important cause when they are young they have a tendency to flail their arms around and grab at their faces and surprisingly can do some real damage. I would not go out the cheap way and just use adult clippers, invest in some baby ones. They are little’er so you have less a chance to cut their little fingers. I also use little baby cue tips to clean my baby’s ears after bath. J&J makes special ones that are designed so you dont go too far into baby’s ear but still be careful. As for a thermometer I bought one that scans the forhead and let me tell you it is a god send. With the armpit and rectal and such thermometers my baby struggled so much I was never sure if i got an accurate reading but with the forhead one i just hold it a few inches from his forhead and it reads his temp. I dont remember what its called but I bought it at target for about 70-75 dollars. Kinda spendy but I wanted to make sure I got a reliable one and I double checked it with the one the hospital gave me and its accurate by those standards. This may be a bit off topic but I also recommend a wipes warmer. I own a munchkin baby wipes warmer and I love it. I know some people say they dry out wipes but mine never has and sometimes i dont use i for a day, so its not that I use them fast enough. But my baby doesnt cry and struggle so much when i use warm wipes so that might be something to think about. Also if its a boy I wld make sure to have some vaseline also for the circumsicion if you plan to have it. I know the hospital gives you some but they didnt give me much and I ran out so I ended up having to send my bf out to get some. Pain. Plus it can be used a rash cream so its not like it will go to waste. Just nice to have so you dont have to worry about running out and having to go get some with a new little baby in the house to worry about. I bought some extra nasal aspirators (booger suckers) cause i throw mine away after so many uses or if a booger gets stuck up in it and i cant get it out cause i think thats gross… Well thats all I can think of… Hope this helped. I tried to be thourough.
