Duct tape for warts: a sticky subject
Does duct tape really belong in your home medicine cabinet? How did duct tape earn its place next to your tube of Neosporin and half-full bottle of Tylenol in the first place?
The story of duct tape for warts begins with a study in 2002 from the Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine. The study concluded duct tape was slightly more effective than freezing for treating warts. Main stream American media embraced this study. The newspapers, television, and radio sound bites informed everyone that duct tape was the next greatest thing for warts. Trumpets sounded a welcoming fanfare as physicians and patients eagerly jumped on the duct tape bandwagon.
One problem with five second sound bites is that they don’t allow for criticism. Why weren’t the patients and researchers blinded to the treatments? Were enough subjects studied? Why weren’t adults included in the study? Did autosuggestion play a role in the treatment of these warts?
Let’s fast forward to November, 2006. The same medical journal publishes a different wart study with 103 children. Duct tape was compared to a placebo (a corn pad) and both were found to be ineffective. Furthermore, 15% of the duct tape children experienced side effects like redness or dry skin.
Finally, let’s fast forward to March, 2007. Another study looking at duct tape in 90 adults appeared in the Archives of Dermatology. Duct tape was again compared to a placebo (a mole skin pad). The study was double-blinded and randomized (a fancy way of saying the study was very high-quality). The researchers found no statistical difference in the two treatments, suggesting duct tape has no effect.
So, what should be concluded from all of this talk about study outcomes, warts, corn pads, and duct tape? The bottom line is that duct tape is likely to be ineffective for treating warts (I hope this new sound bite sticks). Over the counter treatments with salicylic acid or freezing are much more effective. Also, I think the media and physicians should always proceed with caution before embracing a new treatment.
Getting back to your medicine cabinet, a roll of duct tape is really too big to fit inside. However, Neosporin and Tylenol won’t fix a book binding or help with quick repairs during a NASCAR race.

Tubes Neosporin Questions
Neosporin for conjunctivitis?
I have a very mild case of conjunctivitis in my left eye. I am pretty sure it is not allergy induced because antihistamine eye drops provide minimal relief.
It seems to have gotten better since yesterday.
My pharmacist friend told me that if I got a new, clean (sterile) tube of neosporin and put it around the eye lid and tear duct that a little will go in the eye and clear it up.
Is this okay to do?
I’ve been told that the only difference between regular neosporin and the opthalamic version is that the latter has a sterile tip.
Oh my God! Do not do this! Please, just go to the doctor for a prescription.
Gerbils – Am I doing everything right?
I just got 2 gerbils last Thursday. Luna is dove colored, Selene is black. I stupidly bought pine bedding, and have had them on it for 6 days. I’ve always had hamsters who did well with pine, but these are my first gerbils. Today I noticed that Luna’s nose was bleeding a little bit. Her nose isn’t red (it’s still her usual pink) and she’s not losing hair on it. I bought aspen bedding and fixed up the cage tonight. I read somewhere to use Neosporin on the nose, and I applied it twice today. I have my girls in a plastic cage with lots of tubes, aspen bedding, paper towel to nest with, cardboard tubes, regular hamster/gerbil food (picking out the sunflower seeds), and a dog biscuit to chew on. I read humidity is bad, so I turned on the dehumidifier last night and moved them to a dryer room during the day today. Am I doing anything wrong that caused her nose to bleed? Or was it the pine bedding and/or humidity? Will the sore nose go away if I continue to treat it at home?
It sounds like you are doing everything just fine since you switched the bedding. You do need to be careful with a plastic cage b/c they will chew it up. Many gerbil owners–myself included–keep their gerbils in a glass aquarium with a screen top. You may want to consider switching to this. It is really much easier to maintain. I do not believe your gerbil actually had a bloody nose. Gerbil mucus is reddish/pinkish. It is more likely she had a runny nose–probably caused by the pine. She should heal up just fine. I give my gerbil chew sticks (4 for 88cents at wal-mart) instead of a biscuit, but that’s really just personal preference, so you’re fine. It really does sound like you’ve fixed up all your problems and that you’re doing a great job with them!
