How to Prevent Diaper Rash
Diaper rash may be caused by friction due to wet diapers rubbing against the baby’s sensitive skin or irritants like feces, urine or cleaning agents. It may also be triggered by a fungal or yeast infection following antibiotic use or an allergic reaction to diapers, baby wipes, soap, lotion or the elastic band in plastic pants.
Diaper rash is seen as inflamed skin. It is characterized by a rash of red bumps in the buttock, genital and upper thigh area. There are over the counter ointments and treatments that have proven successful in treating diaper rash. If your baby’s diaper rash worsens despite these treatments, more frequent diaper changes, or if it occurs along with fever, blisters or boils, if it is a rash that extends beyond the diaper area, or if it has pus or a weeping discharge, seek medical advice.
You may not always be able to protect your baby from diaper rash, but there are steps you can take that can help significantly reduce the occurrence.
- Change your baby’s diaper often, and as soon as it is soiled. If your baby sits too long in a diaper with feces and or urine in it, this can cause diaper rash to develop and to become worse.
- Switch between the different brands of diapers until you find the one that seems to affect your baby’s sensitive skin the least. This will help to keep diaper rash at a minimum.
- Avoid scented baby wipes. Scented baby wipes can exacerbate diaper rash, and your baby’s skin in general. Unscented wipes or even just plain water is best.
- Clean your baby’s bottom, thighs and genitals well each time you change his diaper. Even leaving a bit of urine or feces on the skin can exacerbate your baby’s delicate skin and cause diaper rash.
- Put white zinc oxide or petroleum ointment on your baby’s diaper rash to help keep him as comfortable as possible and help towards healing the diaper rash.
Some babies just have more sensitive skin than others. If allergy symptoms like hay fever, asthma and baby eczema run in your family they may be more likely to get diaper rash. For these babies, preventative measures with a diaper rash cream or ointment is necessary at every changing.

Zinc Oxide Rash Questions
Whats the best way to deal with rosacea??
Whats the best way to deal with rosacea at home?? I have some success with using aloe vera as a moisterizer, but I have also heard that for dryer areas of the skin (like on my chin and around my nose) that products with zinc oxide (like diaper rash cream) are also helpful. Does anyone know anything that can help me with this? My skin feels really dry and it doesnt look very good.
Mine disappeared after chugging straight, sour cranberry juice. [Available in health food stores and some grocery stores.] It’ll kill a fever in a snap, too!
Scented baby lotion on new tattoo?
Ok so i just got a tattoo this morning, and i went to buy a lotion they told me to get A&D but i couldnt find it, and picked another baby diaper rash ointment, its says certified organic petroleum free, zinc oxide based but when i applied it it had a light scent and i was wondering if i should keep using it or buy something else??
You could check the ingredient panel to see if there’s any added scents. If there is, you should get a lotion that isn’t unscented. Scented lotion can burn a tattoo.
I use Rocco’s Old School on my tattoos. All natural. Heals fast and healthy.
